As the Democratic nominee in an overwhelmingly Democratic town, Mamdani leads in…
Raskin began his opening statement by praising Patel for being the first Indian-American to lead the FBI, but that was where the flattery stopped. Raskin said Patel’s “primary qualification” for the job was his “unwavering loyalty to Trump.””Unlike other directors, you had no work experience at the FBI, but you had made over a thousand political and media appearances in support of Trump’s campaign,” Raskin said. “We’ve learned how dangerous it is to name as director of the FBI a man who thinks of himself as a fairytale knight.”Raskin laid into Patel for his handling of the investigation into Kirk’s…

Cathy Harris was a member of the Merit Systems Protection Board, an independent, quasi-judicial agency that works to ensure federal employees are protected against abuses by agency management, until she was fired earlier this year by the Trump administration. Maansi Srivastava/NPR hide caption toggle caption Maansi Srivastava/NPR It was past Cathy Harris’ bedtime when an email arrived in her inbox on February 10 from someone in the presidential personnel office. She opened it the following morning. It was brief and to the point. “Thank you for your service. You know, you’re fired, basically,” Harris said, summarizing the missive. President Trump…
Democrat Abigail Spanberger is heading into the final stretch of her campaign to try and become the next governor of Virginia with vocal support from two former Republican members of Congress. In a new development first reported by CBS News, Spanberger’s campaign is set to tout endorsements from former Reps. Barbara Comstock and Denver Riggleman. The show of support from the two, who both backed Democrat Kamala Harris in last year’s presidential race, also includes an advertisement. “I saw firsthand that Abigail was one of the most bipartisan members of Congress,” Riggleman says in the advertisement, while Comstock adds that her “support…
The Last Days of Discourse / September 17, 2025 The GOP president is both a dire threat to democratic governance and a clownish mob boss. Ad Policy This article appears in the October 2025 issue, with the headline “From the F-Word to the T-Word.” As we come up on the anniversary of the 2024 election, it seems as good a time as any to ask, “Has it happened here?” Can we meaningfully call the second Trump administration a fascist regime? For most casual observers, it’s not much of a question. What are you supposed to call it when masked and…
Washington — House GOP leaders on Tuesday announced a plan to avoid a shutdown and keep the government funded until Nov. 21, unveiling legislation that also includes funds for additional security to lawmakers and other officials in the wake of conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
