NPR’s Mary Louise Kelly speaks with former Trump national security advisor Ambassador John Bolton about the President’s upcoming summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. MARY LOUISE KELLY, HOST: Two minutes – that is how long President Trump says it will take him to figure out whether Russian President Vladimir Putin is serious about finding a way to end his war with Ukraine. The details are still scarce but Putin and Trump are set to meet this Friday in Alaska. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was not invited. I want to bring in someone who was in the room the last time…
Washington — President Trump announced this week the deployment of 800 members of the D.C. National Guard to the District of Columbia, as part of a push to crack down on crime in the nation’s capital. The president is also temporarily taking control of the District’s Metropolitan Police Department. Hundreds of additional federal law enforcement officers have also joined the effort recently, from a variety of agencies fanning out across the city.”I’m deploying the National Guard to help reestablish law, order and public safety in D.C., and they’re going to be allowed to do their job properly,” Mr. Trump said at…
Comment / August 12, 2025 New York’s political establishment threw the whole post-9/11 playbook against the Democratic nominee for mayor, and came up empty. Ad Policy This article appears in the September 2025 issue, with the headline “Escape From Fear City.” It’s been a summer of fear like no other in New York. This time, the fearful include the city’s richest residents, who see their dominance threatened by mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. Fueling their panic is the mounting realization that the War on Terror politics they sought to use against him—in a city reshaped by 9/11—didn’t work. The city’s power…
Lifelong boat captain George Billiris says he’s lucky to be alive after Vibrio vulnificus, the so-called “flesh-eating” bacteria that lurks in warm coastal waters like those along Florida’s Gulf Coast, nearly killed him.”I started to get chills, feverish, my leg was swelling, burning,” the third-generation sponge fisherman told CBS News.Billiris was wading in the water while fishing with his grandson back in July 2019 when he contracted the bacteria, which got into his system through a cut he had on his back leg. It was “just a little tiny scab,” Billiris said.At the hospital, doctors used a marker on his…
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker on Tuesday signed new legislation requiring more thorough background checks before hiring police officers, a law inspired by the shooting death of Sonya Massey.Massey was shot and killed by former Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson in July 2024 inside her home near Springfield. Grayson has been fired and charged with first-degree murder in Massey’s killing, and questions have been raised about why he was hired in the first place, given concerns about his conduct at past police jobs.Grayson shot and killed Massey as she was checking on a pot of boiling water in her kitchen while saying “I…
Howard Lutnick, who now oversees the Census Bureau as the commerce secretary, stands behind President Trump in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, D.C., in February before his confirmation to Trump’s cabinet. Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images Less than a week after President Trump said he has ordered a “new” census,” the cabinet official who oversees the Census Bureau acknowledged Tuesday that Congress, not the president, has final say over the national head count that’s used to reshape election maps and guide federal funding, NPR has exclusively learned. Speaking at a town-hall…

Activism / August 12, 2025 Ad Policy Katie Wilson.(Courtesy of Katy Wilson’s campaign) Walking into Seattle mayoral candidate Katie Wilson’s election night party, I recognized very few people. The mainstream Democratic standard-bearers were all missing. In their place was a crowd of 20-, 30- and 40-year-olds, all excited and inspired by a candidate who spoke their language and lived their life. Throughout the night, it became a greater and greater exercise in power, new progressive pragmatic political power. Six months ago, the current mayor of Seattle, Bruce Harrell, was on a glide path to reelection. He had locked up union…

What was intended as a fundraising mission has become a nightmare for American teen influencer Ethan Guo, who has been stuck in a remote location in Chilean territory in Antarctica since June.Last year, Guo began a journey to become the youngest person to fly solo to all seven continents. The trip also aimed to raise $1 million for childhood cancer research through St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Guo flew his Cessna 182Q to North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Australia and Europe before heading to Antarctica. Prosecutors said he was authorized to fly to the Chilean city of Punta Arenas, which…
