President Trump on Thursday signed an executive order aiming to slash public subsidies to PBS and NPR as he alleged “bias” in the broadcasters’ reporting. The order instructs the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and other federal agencies “to cease Federal funding for NPR and PBS” and further requires that they work to root out indirect sources of public financing for the news organizations. The White House, in a social media post announcing the signing, said the outlets “receive millions from taxpayers to spread radical, woke propaganda disguised as ‘news.'”The broadcasters get roughly half-a-billion dollars in public money through the Corporation for…

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the Supreme Court’s newest member, denounced on Thursday what she described as “relentless attacks” on judges, and an environment of harassment that “ultimately risks undermining our Constitution and the rule of law.”“ Across the nation, judges are facing increased threats of not only physical violence, but also professional retaliation just for doing our jobs,” said Justice Jackson, speaking at a conference for judges held in Puerto Rico. “And the attacks are not random. They seem designed to intimidate those of us who serve in this critical capacity.”Justice Jackson did not mention President Trump by name nor cite any…

The disclosure came three weeks after Mr. Trump, in an act of score settling and intimidation, directed the Justice Department to investigate Mr. Krebs.“Chris Krebs is under active investigation by law enforcement agencies,” a spokesman for the Department…
Secretary of state. Acting administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development. Acting archivist for the National Archives and Records Administration. And now interim national security adviser to President Trump.Like a Christmas tree bedecked with shiny ornaments of every shape and size, Marco Rubio, 53, has accumulated four titles starting with his confirmation as secretary of state on Jan. 20, the same day that Mr. Trump took his oath of office. It very well could be a record in the modern history of the U.S. government. And it adds to the immigrant success story that is core to the narrative of…
Former high school teacher Ryan Walters was elected Oklahoma state superintendent of schools in 2022, but more than two years later, the state still ranks 49th in education. “I was elected to turn the state’s education system around,” Walters told CBS News. “We were 49th when I was elected. We’re working to move all these things around, and it takes a dramatic shift in education.”As he works on addressing that problem, he has also turned a lot of his attention to President Trump’s mass deportation plans. “We should be utilizing all of our resources to make sure we are supporting what…

McDonald’s, a stalwart American fast food chain, posted a steep sales drop at U.S. restaurants in its first quarter earnings report Thursday, citing economic uncertainty and diminished consumer sentiment.”Heightened anxiety” about the economy, driven largely by tariffs, is weighing on lower-income Americans, McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said on the call.
