Jim Watson/AFP hide caption toggle caption Jim Watson/AFP President Trump on Thursday is set to announce his first trade agreement since his steep tariffs last month roiled stock markets, teasing the announcement in a social media post late Wednesday night. Trump did not reveal the name of the country, nor the terms, saying only that it was “A BIG, AND HIGHLY RESPECTED, COUNTRY” and that representatives would join him for the announcement at 10 a.m. ET in the Oval Office. The lights never seem to be on and the shutters stay shut.As the weeks pass by at the White House, the corner of the residence long used by first ladies remains dark, because this first lady does not really live in Washington. Melania Trump vanishes from view for weeks at a time, holing up in Trump Tower in Manhattan or in Florida, where she can lie low at Mar-a-Lago. Administration officials say she is at the White House more often than the public knows, but when exactly, and for how long, these officials will not (or perhaps cannot) say for…

Wall Street climbs in choppy trading after Fed warns of rising risks for economy, holds rates steady
U.S. stocks ended a choppy day higher after the Federal Reserve left its main interest rate alone, as was widely expected, but also warned about rising risks for the U.S. economy. The S&P 500 rose 0.4% Wednesday. The index is coming off a two-day losing streak that had snapped its nine-day winning run. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.7%, and the Nasdaq composite added 0.3%. Fed Chair Jerome Powell said the central bank has time to wait before making any potential moves on rates, but he warned that sustained tariffs could both weaken the economy and trigger higher inflation.…
UnitedHealth Group is being sued by investors who claim the company misled them by allegedly withholding information on how the company was being affected by a backlash prompted by its response to the December killing of top executive Brian Thompson. In the proposed class action lawsuit filed Wednesday in the Southern District of New York, investor Roberto Faller alleges UnitedHealth “artificially inflated prices” when the company initially forecast earnings per share of $29.50 to $30 in December. UnitedHealth then reaffirmed that outlook in January, despite mounting a backlash following an October Senate report on its high rate of claim denials and, later, the December killing…
On a recent afternoon in Philadelphia, an air traffic controller began shouting that he had lost his radar feed for planes flying in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport. Some of his colleagues still had radar but their radios went dead, prompting frantic calls to their counterparts in New York urging them to keep their planes away from Newark’s airspace. Then, for 30 harrowing seconds until the radios came back, there was nothing more to do but hope — as they had no means of telling pilots how to avoid crashing their planes into one another.Shortly after that, one controller discovered…
